AUDITION NOTICE
Writing in the Sand: An Evening With John Herbert

GSU Theatre and the Players of Georgia State University announce auditions for ten male and female roles, all unpaid, in our summer production, Writing in the Sand: An Evening With John Herbert Tuesday, June 14, and Wednesday, June 15, from 7-9 p.m. in the Alumni Hall Theater in Dahlberg Hall. Callbacks will be held Friday, June 17, at 6 p.m. in the same location. Theatre majors are required to prepare a one-minute monologue. Non-majors may prepare a monologue or do a cold reading from material provided at the audition.

Rehearsals will take place on weekday evenings in the theatre, with an all-day technical rehearsal Sunday, July 17. The production runs Thursday, July 21, through Saturday, July 23, with performances at 8 p.m. in the Alumni Hall Theater. The play is a celebration of survival, presenting three different views of life as captured by John Herbert, the pioneering playwright whose prison drama Fortune and Men's Eyes revolutionized gay theatre.

Writing in the Sand: An Evening With John Herbert consists of three pieces:

· Writing in the Sand--a re-creation of Herbert's 1995 public reading of the first chapter of his memoirs in which he describes the courage it took to be openly gay in Toronto in the late 1940s and survive a prison sentence on trumped up charges. This piece is already cast.
· "Pearl Divers"--a short comic play about an effeminate gay man's attempts to land a job at a prominent downtown cafeteria.
· "Beer Room"--a brief mood piece depicting a night in a prominent gay bar as the characters deal with relationship issues, the past and an uncertain future.

Roles being cast:

"Pearl Divers"
· Queenie: A young, effeminate gay man, tough and sharp-tongued in the traditions of the best old movie "dames."
· Hostess: A conceited young woman working in a prominent downtown cafeteria.
· Miss Burns: An older woman and closeted lesbian who manages a prominent downtown cafeteria.
· Mary: An older Irish-Canadian woman, practical and tough, who runs the dish-washing room in a prominent downtown cafeteria.

"Beer Room"
· Young Man--A handsome young actor, formerly involved in a gay relationship but now married with a child on the way.
· Actor--An older actor, once involved with the Young Man, now alone but on the brink of success.
· Artist--An older, wiser man or woman who frequents the gay bar looking for models and possible pick-ups.
· Waiter--A straight man working in a gay bar, comfortable fielding passes from the patrons and keeping the few difficult customers under control.
· Stranger--A very handsome young man, new to town after growing up on a farm, checking out the scene.
· Regular--An aging part-time hustler whose ability to get what he can out of life is now hampered by his heavy drinking.

Trey McIntyre Project (TMP) was an immediate sensation with both
critics and audiences alike when the troupe burst out on the scene just
three years ago. Led by celebrated choreographer Trey McIntyre, whose
work has been commissioned by American Ballet Theatre, Stuttgart Ballet,
and many other top dance companies around the world, TMP also boasts an
ensemble of accomplished professional dancers who have danced with
companies such as The Washington Ballet, Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet,
Ballet Memphis, and Oregon Ballet Theatre. Their raw passion and fresh
take on ballet is simply and stunningly beautiful.

Artist’s Showcase of Atlanta Kids/Teens Writing Submissions

The Artist’s Showcase of Atlanta Kids/Teens is looking for writers for its upcoming showcase. Our adult showcase last year was a huge success with actors receiving agent
representation and other job offers. This showcase will consist of actors, ages 7 to 17, performing original scenes for some of the top agents, casting directors, producers, theatre directors, and other industry professionals.

We are looking for original scenes with a minimum of two actors and a maximum of 6 actors, mostly comedic. These scenes need to run 4-10 min. in length. This showcase will contain some singing; so if you have scenes that contain music, even group numbers, submit those as well. Your submission must be received by March 12, 2010.

If you’re interested in submitting your work(s), send an email to Shontelle Thrash at artistsshowcase@live.com to request a release form.

This form must accompany your work(s). You can use one form for all of your submissions. This gives us “non-exclusive” rights to use it for the purposes of the showcase. If someone sees the showcase and wants your scene; then by all means, get it to them. You retain full rights to your work. It also ensures that your work is original. Look over the two-page release form and let me know if you have any questions.

If your work is selected, you will be notified via email.

RENT to illuminate the stage during ‘Season of Love’

Milledgeville, Ga. (Feb. 12, 2010)— Georgia’s first university performance of RENT will join the exhilarating lineup of productions by the Georgia College & State University Department of Theatre Feb. 24 – 28.

The Department of Theatre is collaborating with the Department of Music to bring RENT to the Georgia College campus. This will be the first university performance of RENT in Georgia The play was released to college campuses just this summer.

Professor and director Dr. Amy Pinney showed her excitement and determination when she announced the performance.

“When I first pitched the idea of our Department of Theatre and Dance doing RENT, I knew it was an enormous undertaking,” said Pinney. “Still, I wanted to direct something that not only my students really wanted to do but also something the community really wanted to see.”

The cast of 30 will perform 42 musical numbers with a live band of Georgia College students, staff, and alumni. The cast will portray the story of eight main characters and all the sacrifice and heartache each goes through.

“RENT is such an amazing story of a combination of love and sacrifice with songs that you can dance to and ones you can cry to. RENT is a must-see musical that we are super excited to help make its debut here in Milledgeville,” said Caleigh Allen, who plays Maureen.

The story of RENT centers on love as well as community. The characters are linked to each other through each other. The importance of community among all the characters is showcased throughout the performance.

“RENT is not only a musical but a reminder of what makes life important which is community and the love that perpetuates from it. RENT explores such raw emotions and strong connections that I feel it would be impossible to not get captured by the story,” said Jordan Hale, who plays Mark.

Along with community, the focus of RENT will include key elements such as human rights.

"As part of our GCSU Theatre Department's Season of Global Justice, RENT is featured in the campus-wide Human Rights Symposium, and presents global issues of HIV-AIDS to which we hope the community will respond," said Karen Berman, Theatre Chair and Artistic Director.

The honor and prestige of acquiring such a Broadway hit and being able to present it to the community has been an outstanding achievement for the Georgia College Theatre Department. The cast and crew’s excitement shows that the musical should not be missed.

“This is such a big show that I have been waiting for some train wreck to happen. However, there has not been one. In fact, it has been the opposite; everyone not only meets the challenge of the show, but surpasses it,” said Nic Marrone, who plays Angel.

Pinney also expressed her excitement in working with Dr. Wendy Mullen, Musical Director, and Julie Mulvihill, Choreographer.

"Dr. Wendy Mullen has been doing incredible work with the cast. The music in this play is so challenging, yet over and over again, they are nailing it. Julie Mulvihill’s choreography is stunning. She’s created more than one showstopper.”

Although the play will be recommended for mature audiences, the department hopes to reach to the community through love, people, and experience.

“Very rarely can you find a show that focuses on what truly matters in this life. The love we experience and the people we share it with, it’s no secret why RENT has touched so many people in so many ways,” said Marc Osborn, who plays Roger.

RENT ticket prices range from $7 to $15 and performances will be held in Russell Auditorium Feb. 24-27 at 8 p.m. and Feb. 28 at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at GCSUTickets.com. Group discounts are available.

July 9-17, 2010

Guest Artists are being determined, but the recent teaching roster has included: Lee Blessing, David Dower, Mark Bly, Melanie Marnich, David Ives, Dael Orlandersmith, Carl Hancock Rux, Karen Zacarías, Ken Ludwig, Carlos Murillo, Caleen Sinette Jennings, Heather McDonald, Marsha Norman, Howard Shalwitz and many others.

A ten-day playwriting intensive at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Participants are university students, faculty and professionals from across the country.

The program consists of rigorous writing workshops and discussions of the art, craft and business of playwriting with the Program's Director, Gary Garrison and a wide range of distinguished guest artists.

Classes will meet 10am-12:30pm, 1:30-6pm daily. Informal concert
readings of participants' work will be scheduled in the evening during the ten-day period.

Playwriting Intensive participants will be accepted in two tracks in 2010 (all tracks will have sessions with each of the guest artists):

-Fundamentals
-Intermediate/Advanced

Tuition:
$500

Housing:
Travel, housing and meals are the responsibility of the participant.

Space in the George Washington University Residence Halls, in the Kennedy Center neighborhood, has been reserved for the participants at a range of $32-$70.

For those whose budgets will allow, there are a number of hotels in the Kennedy Center vicinity.

Dear Faculty:

I am writing with information regarding an incredible summer opportunity for your current college students: ACTion: Ecuador 2010 an opportunity to travel, serve, teach and perform, organized by Dramatic Adventure Theatre, a theatre company that acts!

Student participants must be adventurous and crave creative involvement in both theatre and service work. Those cast in the summer project will spend 24 days in Ecuador creating and rehearsing an original play, teaching theatre and English language skills, and volunteering throughout the country. At the completion of the project, students will perform their original pieces with professional theatre artists in a showcase presented in New York City.

In the summer of 2009, DAT took 75 professional actors and students from across the United States to work with various communities and organizations in Ecuador including: Quito, Quilotoa, Mindo, Esmeraldas, the Amazon, and The Galapagos Islands. Volunteer experiences along the way included
building a community center and media library in the Andes, repairing Solar Panels, building dry bathrooms in the Amazon, planting trees in the Galapagos and teaching theatre and English language skills in every community along the way. Adventure activities included hiking through the Andes, zip-lining through cloud forests, swimming with sharks, learning Afro-Ecuadorian dances, fishing for piranha in the Amazon and more. The actors' experiences turned into 9 original plays performed in New
York City last July at both the Richmond Shepherd Theatre as well as at Teatro Iati.

Currently, professional artist auditions are being held in New York City and in Los Angeles for our 2010 trip. Limited space is also available for student theatre artists; hence, we are interested in holding an audition/informational session at your school.

In addition to the audition, students must also submit an essay of interest as well as a letter of recommendation. Selected artists are responsible for funding their experience. The cost of each trip is determined by the second week destination; Esmeraldas costs $3200, La Selva costs $3600 and the Galapagos costs $3800. Actor Needed For Gender Study

Thanks for calling me back on my request and submitting this to all actors at GSU!! What I am searching for is an actor that could come into a classroom and spew out violent language towards me in front of my graduate colleagues in the Fine Arts Department for 3-5 minutes in duration.

I am an artist working in performance art. My plan is to create an environment where initially I would read spoken word poetry regarding the subject of gender violence for a time period of 10 minutes. I
then would like to hire an actor come into the classroom and hurl violent language at me for a time period of 3- 5

minutes with my classmates not knowing about the setup. My goal is to reverse the roles of spectator regarding a very serious matter in our society. After this emotive act is done, I will say no, and then have the 8 students write a sequence of emotive word responses.

I know it may sound corny - but it is art right. I am looking for someone who can shed 10 minutes of
their time to perform this for my class on Monday the 15th of February at 11:15. It won't take long and I
will pay a Starbucks gift certificate worth 15 bucks. What I need from you is a dedication to act out a

The Georgia State University Players mourn the loss of James L. Toles, IV, who died in an early morning car accident in Florida on Monday, December 28, 2009. James, also known as "Jay" and "Lafayette," recently had his play "The Race" performed in the Fall 2009 Student Showcase. He was a dedicated student and playwright. James will be deeply missed.

Hi all,

Many of you likely saw the media coverage of the terrible automobile accident which recently took the life of one of our most promising undergraduates, James (Jay) Toles, over the holiday break. Beyond his good work in our classes, Toles was also very active in university extracurricular activities, especially the theatre and GSTV.

The university, along with the department of communication, is taking every available opportunity to express our shared profound sense of loss and regret. The note I'm forwarding from the university director of student life and leadership adds more details about the coming funeral.

Actor's Express and Horizon Theatre Company will host the the 2009 National Showcase of New Plays this weekend and you're invited!

The showcase, presented by the National New Play Network (NNPN), will feature staged readings of six new plays. The showcase is a rotating festival that presents new plays from across the country in a staged reading format.

Join the students in THEA 4850 Directing for their first production project, "The Dining Room Plays," Tuesday, September 15, at 12:15 p.m. in the Alumni Hall Theatre at Courtland and Auditorium.

For their first project, the class offers food for thought by writing, directing and performing a series of six-line scenes all with the same setting. Drawn from the work of Charles Marowitz, the six-line scene exercise challenges students' creativity while allowing them to focus on specific performance skills (in this case, script analysis and working with actors) in a highly concentrated format.

Alpha Psi Omega is a National Theater Honors Fraternity. It's co-ed, like most honors fraternities, and yes, it does earn you honor cords for graduation. Eligibility for membership is based on participation in theater productions while at GSU. Basically, if you're dedicated, and you actively participate a bunch, you'r...e in, but the point system is followed.

So what does APO do? A lot of casts actually put on a production every semester. Our cast (chapter) will be putting on little shows and holding events when we can. We’ll be coming up with and trying a lot of different things in our first year (if we bring it back). There's community service and whatnot most times, just like other fraternities and sororities. There's benefits from being a large national organization...one of the biggest thing theater people would get from this is networking...with over 500 casts nationwide, the networking possibilities are endless (or at least close enough to it).

It's a great way to come together with others who're as dedicated to theater as you are, and to accomplish something, and to recognize each other's talent and merits.

And also, it's like other honors fraternities...it's a reward for excelling in your field. you have to participate and be active in theater to be able to be a member...being a theater major and doing your 3 Theater 1010's alone isn't gonna cut it...you have to want it.

You must participate in the costume shop, scene shop, electrics shop...try out for department shows...acting in the showcase, be a part of the GSU Players, do SOMETHING...try to be a part of theater.

Be sure to stop by the Players' Office to sign up to be a Player! Dues are $10 and this includes the end of the year banquet that we hold and any workshops that we host throughout the semester. For example, if we have a make up workshop and a directing workshop, you get in for free just by being a member, whereas other people have to pay $10 for each workshop.

Also, you will have access to the Players' library which has a hundred or so literary works that may assist you in classes that you can check out as well as access to the computer and printer in the Players' Office. Stop by to join today! :)
